ABOUT RICHARD

Practical experience from the client’s side of the table

I have more than 35 years’ experience in building, design and construction. That experience has taught me where projects commonly lose time and money, and how much difference clear, timely decisions can make.

I bring a practical client’s perspective to the professional team: protecting the design ambition while keeping cost, buildability and the realities of construction firmly in view.

A major building project should not become a second job

There are architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, designers, builders and specialist contractors to coordinate; quotations and variations to understand; and hundreds of decisions to make. Without experienced oversight, cost and complexity can build quickly.

With more than 35 years’ experience in construction and design, I look across the whole project from the client’s perspective. I help avoid unnecessary complexity, and costs and help the client enjoy a project that stays under control from start to finish.

HOW I HELP

Clear advice from first ideas to completion

01

Before planning

Set the right brief, team, budget and procurement strategy before expensive decisions become fixed.

02

Design and tender

Test buildability, challenge unnecessary complexity and obtain comparable, properly understood quotations.

03

Construction

Monitor progress, quality, cost and variations; chair meetings and ensure decisions are acted on.

04

Completion

Manage snagging, handover, final accounts and essential warranty information.

A flexible approach

Support shaped around your project

Every project is different, so my involvement can be as much or as little as you need. I can be engaged for a specific task or piece of advice, or provide ongoing support on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. For larger projects, we can also agree a fee linked to the build cost or, where appropriate, identifiable savings achieved.

The arrangement is agreed clearly at the outset, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

INDEPENDENT ADVICE

I work for you

I do not replace your architect, quantity surveyor or builder. I work alongside them while representing one interest only: yours.

My involvement can range from an independent second opinion at a critical moment to full client representation from the earliest design discussions through to completion.

A STRAIGHTFORWARD FIRST STEP

Tell me about your project

If you are considering a substantial new-build, renovation or extension, I would be pleased to have an informal conversation. There is no charge until we have agreed the scope of my involvement and the fee.
